 History
Orkney Seal Rescue works to protect seals, rescuing sick, injured and abandoned animals. We are a registered charity founded in 1988 to cope with the virus which killed over 18,000 common seals. We fight to save seals and raise awareness to their plight. We rely on public support and business sponsorship. Most of the seals that come into the centre have been separated from their mothers before they are able to survive on their own. Others are injured by discarded fishing nets or have been injured by gun shot. They consist of grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) and Common, or Harbour, seals (Phoca vitulina). |
